This will was proved at London the 31 January in year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy five before the Worshipful George Harris - Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Worshipful Sir George ??? knight doctor of Laws [note as this doesn't state who proved to there must be another page this copy is on 3 pages and perhaps when my copy was made this was missed]

Details of him and his writings in a book called ' Hills Horsham's lost stately home and garden' by A.F. Hughes & J. Knight pub by Horsham Museum Society 1999.
He was made a burgess in 1738 by Lord Irwin (Henry Ingram 1691 - 1761 7th Viscount) 'over 50 years John Meredew worked tirelessly for the Irwins. He was described as a gardener, and was probably in charge of the Kitchen Garden rather than the whole estate. He could read and write, but spellin was not his forte - he spelt phonetically, so reading the documents he wrote gives a wonderful impression of his voice.
As he was a burgess, he could and did hold office in the adminstration of the town. One can so easily imagine it - just as today's employers like to be seen as part of the community by 'seconding' staff to work in the community, so Lord Irwin allowed and actively encouraged his servant to take up the onerous duties.'
In 1764 he made a list of voters of Horsham.
It is thought that he was involved with Capability Brown when he was working on the gardens 1765-70.
The Museum at Horsham hold's a series of letters from him to members of the Ingram family.
The mother of Henry Ingram , Isabella lived at Windsor and this may be the connection with Clewer and the Meredew family.
